Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a multi purpose gundog primarily flushing the game and secondly retreiving it back to the shooter, either on land or in the water. They are also excellent household companions.

Height is 19" for dogs and 18" for bitches and weight upto 20 kg. They only come in rich red and white with a lifespan of 10 -15 years. They are a busy, active and merry dog. Very loyal and loving to its family and their gundog instincts make them a terrific watchdog, letting you know when something is not quite right. However movement and noise can set off unnecessary barking.

Welshies maybe reserved with strangers but should never be timid or shy. Socialisation with pups should begin with pups as soon as possible and continue throughout it's life. Welshies are very trainable, intelligent dogs. Training should be fair and consistant, using modern gentle techniques. Welshies do not respond well to heavy handed harsh methods. Training should begin as soon as you get your puppy/dog, before bad habits creep in. Start how you mean to finish. The Welshman is an excellent all round dog, whether you want to go jogging, walking, shooting or just sit by the fire.

Welshies need their feet trimmed regularly and the ear canal opening needs to be kept clean of hair. This helps with minor ear infections. The Welsh coat is beautifully silky and thick and as a result self cleaning, shedding most burrs and mud. They need to be brushed at least weekly.

Welshies excell at agility, endurance, jumping, obedience, gundogs, can be used as therapy dogs and some have excelled as drug detectors in the prison system.
